Woodland areas throughout the East of England could be worth up to £680 million for the region, a report has said.

The report was commissioned to estimate the value of the woodland spread around the region and has said the money could be raised through an increase in recreation use, tourism, environmental projects, education and as a renewable energy source.

Twelve Government departments have joined together to form a partnership dedicated to making the most of woodland areas.

The departments include the Countryside Agency, English Heritage, English Nature, the Forestry Commission and the Environment Agency.

Woodland areas make up 7.3 per cent of land throughout the East of England.

As well as highlighting the positive benefits of using woodland for health and recuperation, the report also says more use could be made of it for encouraging tourism and creating jobs in the tourism industry.
