Essex residents have put in a record-beating performance on recycling, new figures reveal, and the Essex Chronicle's recycling campaign has been instrumental in helping out.
They recycled almost a quarter of all the waste produced in the county - meeting a government target a year ahead of schedule.
Chelmsford, Braintree and Maldon's figures all showed substantial improvement.
Chelmsford Borough Council achieved a recycling rate of 14.27 per cent, smashing the Government's target of 10 per cent.
Launched in January, the Essex Chronicle's campaign has highlighted the importance of recycling waste materials, and focused on some of the businesses and organisations doing their bit to help the environment through increased recycling.
New political head of waste recycling at Chelmsford, Cllr Jason Need said: ''I am delighted that Chelmsford has exceeded these targets and that the Chronicle has done a lot to raise awareness on this subject. We now have to concentrate on helping people to recycle wherever possible."
