Flashing speed signs on a busy stretch of road where a teenager was killed are having a major effect in slowing traffic.
The signs in Eastern Avenue, Southend, are near Cecil Jones High School and flash a warning automatically if motorists are exceeding the 40mph speed limit.
Brian Mulenga, 13, died on the road last year prompting a major concern for road safety improvements in the area.
Labour councillor for St Luke's Ward, which includes the school, Reg Copley said: "The signs are having their effect and the results are encouraging."
Mr Copley was speaking after seeing the latest speed data for the road which has been released by the council's technical and environmental services department.
These have shown there have been reductions of 4.5 mph westbound and 4.6 mph eastbound.
