Local football was today mourning the death of well-known amateur player Alan Carter.
The former Monarchs player, who lived in Ambleside Drive, Southend, died yesterday and his passing sparked tributes from colleagues on the town's football scene.
"Alan was a thorough gentleman who did so much for football in Southend over many years," said one ex-team mate who did not want to be named.
Mr Carter played for the Monarchs when their home was at the Waterworks Ground, which is now part of the Garon golf club complex in Eastern Avenue, Southend.
He worked in advertising in Fleet Street before his retirement.
The keen footballer was born at the Horse and Groom in Southend Road Rochford when his parents run the pub.
Mr Carter leaves a wife, Maureen.
