Police have backed council plans to install CCTV security cameras in Billericay High Street.
Billericay Conservative member Phil Turner says he has received support from the town's police inspector, Richard Croft, for the proposal.
Councillors are now assessing the financial viability of the scheme, which is estimated to cost about £20,000.
Mr Turner said: "We are going for it.
"We have campaigned long and hard on the basis that Billericay does not get a fair deal and now we want to make sure every part of the district gets one.
"We want to upgrade the security measures in place in Billericay High Street."
The Billericay West representative cited a rise in reported crime along the High Street as the major reason for going ahead with the plan.
The major stumbling block to the installation may come as councillors attempt to convince council officers to spare funding - expected to run into tens of thousands of pounds - for the scheme.
Mr Turner confirmed that, unlike schemes in Basildon and Wickford, Billericay would not receive a special grant for CCTV coverage.
