Children from mid Essex primary schools found themselves trying to cope with emergencies ranging from fires to dangers on building sites and railways.
They were taking part in this year's Crucial Crew children's safety project where they were faced with 11 realistic sets depicting real-life emergency situations.
Yesterday it was the turn of 125 year six pupils from John Ray Junior School to take part in the exercise at the Discovery Centre in Great Notley.
Head of year Elizabeth Bartholomew said: "As teachers we take a back seat and let them make their own minds up as they get involved in the role plays.
"Then it is lovely to come back to the classroom and take the issues further."
Pupils from Finchingfield Primary School and Steeple Bumpstead Primary also took part in the event yesterday at the Discovery Centre in Great Notley.
Crucial Crew is run as a joint enterprise between Braintree Council, the emergency services, Essex County Council, the private sector and volunteers
