Despite a family's attempts to prevent a student from killing himself Eric Epange threw himself out of a third window at APU residences and died from head injuries, an inquest heard.
Mr Epange, 24, was staying with his sister in Rectory Lane, Chelmsford, on January 13 when he fell 30 feet to concrete below. He was declared dead at Broomfield Hospital, Coroner's Officer Derek Sewell told the inquest at Chelmsford on Tuesday.
Coroner Mrs Caroline Beasley-Murray recorded a verdict that Mr Epange killed himself.
Student Vivien Enow, Mr Epange's sister, said she and another brother were concerned for Eric's health and took him on a short holiday.
He was depressed, had not eaten for several weeks and said he wanted to end it all.
She consulted a doctor who prescribed medication. Eric took the first dose and went to bed in her flat while she watched over him. When she offered him food and drink she struggled with him to prevent him jumping from the window.
PC Sewell read a statement from a resident of Rectory Lane who described seeing an Afro Caribbean woman struggling with a man of similar nationality at an upstairs window in the university's rooms.
The man was shouting that he was going to jump and wanted to kill himself. The woman lost her grip and the man fell onto a concrete path.
