A new weapon in the fight against street crime is coming to Colchester.

Essex Police today announced the town will get eight Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs).

Their job will be to crack down on anti-social behaviour in shopping areas, schools and housing estates.

They are among 80 extra PCSOs who will hit the streets in each division in the county sometime after October.

The idea of the officers was first tried in the west of Essex when ten of them started work as part of a trial in Waltham Abbey and Loughton.

But now each of the nine police divisions have been allocated some of the officers, who will back up regular police constables.
