A warning has been issued for people to stay away from shrubs which appear to be covered in cobwebs.

The spider's web effect, which has appeared on trees and shrubs, is an infestation of caterpillars which can cause a painful rash.

Web warning - People in the Tending District have been advised to keep clear of what appear to be cobwebs on shrubs

Tendring Council has warned the public to stay away from the brown tail moth caterpillars.

They release tiny hairs which can cause a severe rash if they come into contact with a person's skin.

Many motorists will have noticed the hairy creatures on a bush on the Holland Marshes, where they have formed 'tents' to shelter themselves from cold weather, formed out of a fine whitish silk.

They have also sprung up at the Triangle Shopping Centre in Frinton, and close to Tendring Technology College, Rochford Way.

Bob Allen, vice-principal of Tendring Technology College, said they would be warning the students of the potential dangers caused by the caterpillars, and telling them to stay away from them.

Mike Page, spokesman for Tendring Council, said: "We are advising people to stay well away from them. It can be very irritating to sensitive skin."

He said that, as the bush on the marshes was away from people, they did not believe it would cause any problems, but would inspect both sites.
