There is still time to join in the annual Jim Peters' Southend Half Marathon, being run on Sunday from a course starting just outside the Garon Park Track at Southend Leisure and Tennis Centre.

The race, which begins from outside the centre at the entrance to Kid's Kingdom at 10am, takes a route along Eastern Avenue and ends on the track.

The associated TMK-sponsored fun run begins at 10.15am and covers a course around the playing field of the adjacent Cecil Jones School.

Entries for both events will be accepted on the day and hundreds of runners will be involved with organisers stating that numbers are already well on a par with previous years.

It is the ninth running of the half marathon, which was dedicated to the memory of former Thorpe Bay marathon world record holder Jim Peters when he died in 1999.

As in previous years Fairhavens Hospice and children's hospice Little Haven will be the recipients of cash raised and it is hoped that the £10,000 mark will be reached from the 2003 event.

Tens of thousands of pounds have been raised in the past.

The lower age limit for the half-marathon is 17 years under UKA rules, but children can enter the fun run from the age of eight upwards.

Trophies have again been donated by the Evening Echo and BBC Essex sports presenter Roger Buxton will be the master of ceremonies on the day providing the race commentary.
