Steve Pitt is considering his position after the resignation of his joint-manager Mick Potter at Ryman League side Wivenhoe Town.
Pitt is seeking assurances from the club that he will be able to form the management team that he wants to and bring in the players he wants to.
Pitt told the Evening Gazette: "The board are doing the best to give me reassurance that I can do the job I want to next year.
"People like Kevin Fosket and Mike Boyle work tremendously hard, but there are too few people at the club doing too many jobs.
"There is only so much people can do."
Potter stepped down because he wants to be a boss in his own right again.
And the former Clacton Town chief insists the decision has nothing to do with any animosity between him and fellow Broad Lane manager Pitt.
Potter, who also had a brief spell as joint-boss of Maldon at the start of last season, told the Gazette: "Steve totally understands how I feel.
"It was 100 per cent my decision and it's a choice I've made with my own interests at heart, rather than other peoples."
Pitt added: "I'm disappointed to have lost Mick, he is football through and through.
"However, I respect his decision and his reasons."
