Drivers in Colchester have faced severe rush-hour traffic over the past 24 hours.
The snarl-ups are blamed on work on the Northern Approaches Road, which has cut traffic on the North Station roundabout to one lane.
Drivers coming into Colchester today said they were stuck on the Avenue of Remembrance for half an hour or more as traffic crept forward.
A sign near the roundabout said the lane closure was expected to last until June 9.
PC Steve Woods of Stanway traffic police said: "The development has created some difficulties for motorists in the recent past and where necessary the police have provided assistance.
"The contractors and Colchester Council also share responsibility to ensure traffic hindrance is reduced to a minimum."
