Tendring Council leader Terry Allen has set his sights on becoming an MP if the proposed reorganisation of Tendring's electoral boundaries goes ahead.

The next General Election could see the district divided between two constituencies instead of the current one Harwich in the north and a new Clacton County constituency to the south.

MP Bernard Jenkin's current North Essex seat would be lost completely.

Tory district councillor Mr Allen said: " If the constituency was split I would be honoured to represent the people of the coastal area and would put myself up."

The proposals are due to go before Tendring Council's cabinet on Wednesday for members' opinions.

The Boundary Commission for England's plans, which would be introduced for the 2007 election, aim to ensure each constituency has a similar number of voters.

If the plan is approved, a future Harwich MP would represent Harwich, its surrounding villages, the Manningtree area and Brightlingsea plus Colchester villages including Great Tey, Pyefleet, West Bergholt, Eight Ash Green, West Mersea and Wivenhoe.

It is proposed the new Clacton County constituency would have an electorate of 65,999 while the redesigned Harwich constituency would have an electorate of 67,715
