A 92-year-old man had to be carried out of his bungalow by firefighters after lightning hit the roof.
The emergency services were called to the bungalow in Mill Road, Stock, near Chelmsford, at 7.15am today after smoke was seen coming out of the roof.
Fire station sub officer Calvin Goody, station officer at Ingatestone, said when they arrived an 86-year-old woman was outside the bungalow in a confused state.
"She said her husband was inside. We went in and found the 92-year-old, who was very confused. I then carried him outside."
Mr Goody said the man was given oxygen for smoke inhalation and was checked over by the ambulance crew but refused to go to hospital.
Mr Goody said the couple were homeless and described it as a severe fire.
Fire crews from Ingatestone and Great Baddow attended the blaze and wore breathing apparatus to fight the fire.
