Delays were caused to motorists travelling through Danbury following a burst water main.
A four-inch cast iron main belonging to Essex and Suffolk Water burst in Main Road, opposite Tesco, just after lunchtime on Frida
Repairs were carried out at about 6pm to avoid rush-hour motorists but drivers still had to endure long queues after half the lane was cordoned off.
A spokeswoman said: "It has taken quite a while for repair workers to get there because we've had quite a lot of similar cases.
"It can be quite common because we've had some dry weather and the topsoil starts to dry, then crack, causing the main to burst around it.
