Thunderstorms swept across south Essex today, signalling an end to the heatwave which had seen temperatures soar into the 80s.

Drivers endured a slippery rush-hour as torrential overnight and early morning rain turned many roads into skid-pans.

However, there were no reports of any serious accidents on south Essex roads - although a smashed up TVR sports car on the A127 near the Blinking Owl cafe gave a glimpse of what could have been. Police do not know if anyone was hurt or whether it was stolen and then damaged by thieves.

Southend seemed to suffer the worst of today's storms, but the weathermen say it will remain warm and muggy for a while yet. The weather looks bright for tomorrow but the rain will return again on Wednesday.

Seafront traders and leisure bosses have experienced a record week.

Thousands of people flocked to Southend during the past week as temperatures reached 30 degrees.

Staff at the Rossi ice cream parlour on Western Esplanade had the week licked by serving up thousands of ice creams.

And thousands of people enjoyed the rides at nearby Adventure Island and a stroll down the pier.
