Full consultation will be carried out before more roadworks start in Maldon.
Rodney Bass, Essex County Council member for Highways and Transportation, has assured residents and traders in the town that the next set of work, from the top of Market Hill to West Square, will not be carried out this year.
And he says the council will "consult fully" with the Chamber of Trade and Commerce over the timing of the work.
He said: "We will be doing the necessary resurfacing and going over all the appropriate markings.
"But this crucial section of the High Street is extremely difficult to handle and we need to find a time which won't cause disruption.
"It is a very tricky part of the High Street because it is extremely narrow and has a bend."
He added that at this stage various options were still being looked at and there would be discussions with the district council and the Chamber of Trade and Commerce about the plans.
The work is part of a scheme which has seen Maldon blighted by roadworks for the last two years.
Angry traders complained in May last year because they were not warned about 12 weeks of work on the east side of Market Hill to replace paving
