Campaigning parents today begged irresponsible drivers to cut their speed on their estate before someone dies.

Terrified residents on the Castle View estate, Canvey - covering Papenburg Road, Meppel and Elsinor Avenue - have campaigned tirelessly for four years to rid their streets of "nightmare" drivers.

The latest campaign drive comes as summer arrives and children play out in the streets.

Residents are pleading with councillors to do something, whether it be installing speed cameras, speed humps or a 20mph limit.

A mum-of-three, 40, who wishes to remain nameless for fear of repercussions, is sure unless something is done there will be fatalities very soon. She said: "It's just an accident waiting to happen, something has to be done."

Canvey West councillor Ray Howard and Winter Gardens councillor Norman Bambridge, of the recently formed highways and leisure committee, said they would look into the matter.
