A man has been told to pay back more than £11,000 he stole from his father.

Timothy Saunders, 21, of Meadow Avenue, South Woodham Ferrers, took the money from his father's bank account over a month. A court heard how the theft came to light when his father's bank statement arrived.

Some of the money - £2,300 - was found in an account held by Saunders's girlfriend, Chelmsford Crown Court heard.

Saunders admitted theft and asked for ten similar matters to be considered when he appeared for sentence.

Judge Chris Ball QC told him to repay the money and do 220 hours community service.

"Stealing from your father is the meanest dishonesty imaginable," the judge told Saunders.

Gareth Hughes, mitigating, said Saunders owed a lot of money to people who were pressing him for it.
