Southend Wheelers had good reason to celebrate during a month in which the club reached its 80th birthday.

Ladies' 2002 champion Jenny Patience started the celebrations off in style.

Riding in the Ladies' National ten-mile Time Trial Championships at Leamington Spa she finished first in her category winning Gold in the process.

She was also the highest placed Essex lady.

Junior rider Edward Knowler also had success for the club riding in the Novice/Junior and Fourth Cats TLI event at Eastway, Stratford, east London.

Breaking away with five other riders early on in the 30-mile event, Edward went on to claim the first prime in the race. With five miles to go he broke away again with one other rider who he beat across the line by a wheel in the finishing sprint.

On Sunday Southend Wheelers promoted the Andrews Trophy Road Race on the East Hanningfield/Woodham Ferrers circuit.

Senior club rider Phil Holloway got in to the breakaway bunch midway through the 60-mile event, where he stayed until the finish at the top of Woodham Ferrers Hill.

He was narrowly beaten in a contested sprint to finish a creditable tenth.
