Notley High School, Braintree, wants to build a covered walk-way to improve access around the bustling complex which now has 1,080 students.
But the plan could be hit because of increased financial costs of the project, said assistant head Dave Lee-Allan."It will link the PE and technology end of the school with maths and science," he said.
"It is going to be hugely important because there are so many students in the school at the moment and there is only one main route through the school.
"When there are 1,000 students on the move, it causes real congestion problems."
The finance for the £100,000 scheme includes specialist £40,000 funding provided for students with special mobility needs.
But,with increased costs now likely, there is a question mark over the plans already submitted to Braintree District Council.
Other work will definitely go ahead in the summer, including £26,000 on the main entrance and reception area and the installation of two lifts in the main building, because of legislation aimed at ensuring that schools have full disabled access by October 2004.
The school is also seeking planning permission for bases for three new temporary classrooms to cope with the increased numbers.
