Bobbies really are out pounding the streets on Canvey, despite uproar over station opening hours.
That was the message newly elected councillors were keen to reinforce at last night's Canvey West area forum.
Councillors moved quickly to dispel rumours uncovered at the recent Canvey East forum the island does not have round-the-clock police protection and cover.
Chairman Tony Belford (Con, Canvey West) said: "There are a number of residents who believe Canvey doesn't have police on duty 24-hours-a-day and think police have to come from Rayleigh to respond to calls.
"Canvey has a 24-hour police station, but not a 24-hour office as it is believed the public are better served by police being out on the street rather than sitting locked away in an office."
However, many residents scoffed at his words.
A grandfather said it took more than an hour for police to respond to his call, despite the fact he lives within walking distance of the station. He said: "It wouldn't take that long if there were really police in the nearby area."
