Tough new measures are being proposed to trap noisy lorries parked illegally overnight in a Canvey car park.

Castle Point Council's highways and leisure committee is to decide on Monday evening whether to call in a wheel clamping firm to tackle the problem at Lubbins car park, Eastern Esplanade,Canvey.

Residents complained about the disturbance caused by the constant humming of refrigerated lorries and the disruption of lorry drivers starting up the engines and driving off early in the morning.

Already there is a sign up in the car park prohibiting overnight parking, but council officers have been exploring other possibilities.

These included a plan to install concrete bollards, costing £6,000, but the wheel clamping option through a firm called Parking Control Services proved much cheaper.

Castle Point Leisure Services manager Chris Moran said in a report to committee members: "An initial inquiry has been made with Parking Control Services and they have stated that the only costs to the council in respect of Lubbins car park would be the purchase and installation of clamping warning signs at £35 each per year."

Councillors are being recommended to appoint the firm to provide a wheel clamping service to deter unauthorised lorry parking.
