Nurse Jackie Lofting, 37, who has children aged 12 and seven, of Scarfe Way, Greenstead, said she was appalled when her friend saw the needle lying just yards from where her children play.
The needle was removed shortly after it was reported.
The mother-of-two said: "I was absolutely shocked. It was right by the bus stop and the children here play on a grass area just a few yards from there."
Alison Woolnough, community health co-ordinator at Colchester Council, said: "If people see needles they should not touch them and keep people away from them if possible.
"They should let the council's emergency team know and they will come and collect them. The reason people should not touch needles is the risk of infection from a number of diseases."
The council number people should call if they spot a hypodermic needle is 01206 282652.
