Plans to revamp a major service to residents in Tendring have received a £200,000 cash windfall, it was revealed today.

A bid to upgrade Tendring Council's benefits and revenues service has been successful - and there could be more money on the way in the near future.

The Department of Works and Pensions has agreed a £211,000 grant for a document image processing system which will greatly improve facilities in the department.

It will help meet some of the costs required to reshape what is offered to customers.

As part of the upgrade, the existing hard copy filing system can now be upgraded with electronic scan and store equipment.

The money has been made available under performance standards cash and is in the form of two-to-one match funding.

Now the Department of Works and Pensions grants committee has told the council it will be asking for further information regarding a second stage of the bid.

It is hoped that will be decided by the committee early next month.

Terry Allen, Tendring Council's executive leader, welcomed the windfall, which he felt would be a major boost for the service.

He said it will help speed up the way the benefits and revenues service deals with its customers.
