A firsttime novelist from Braintree is hoping his debut children's novel has enough magic behind it to make it a bestseller.
Dave Lane, 42, an engineer from Grenville Road, Braintree, was inspired to write his first work, Flapjack's Wizard Adventure, by his son, Michael, seven.
He said: "About 12 months ago in Frinton, I was asked by my son to write a short story. As he is a fan of Harry Potter and I like Terry Pratchett books, I thought I would write a book along those lines."
The novelist said he wrote three short stories for his son, which followed on from each other, and then decided to merge them into one novel. It took him three months to write the stories and another three months of editing.
He said the main character, Flapjack, is based on his son, Michael, and other characters are based on Michael's friends.
The author is paying to have 300 copies of the book published by Matador.
Flapjack's Wizard Adventures will be on sale at Hannay's in Braintree High Street, from June 1
