Education chiefs in Southend are celebrating a £1.4million handout to give hundreds of special needs children the best start in life.

The Government grant will pay for new learning centres to be built at two secondary and two primary schools.

The pupils who attend the centres - at Prittlewell Technology College, in Westcliff, Shoebury High School, Darlinghurst Primary School, in Leigh, and another primary which has yet to be decided - will benefit from specialist small group teaching.

They will also be able to join in some lessons with their mainstream school friends.

The resource centres will mean Southend will be able to provide for more pupils with specialist needs where parents choose for their youngsters to attend mainstream schools.

Sally Carr, the council's executive member for education, said: "We are grateful for the money the Government has awarded us.

"These proposals have the support of all special schools and headteachers and will mean real improvements for pupils with special needs."
