The launch of a major new Government initiative tackling drugs has been welcomed.
Southend Drug Action Team has welcomed the programme aimed at tackling drugs misuse among young people.
The agency echoed the Government's concern about the increasing problem and the need for a new approach.
Frank, launched this week, comprises a new national helpline (0800 77 66 00) and a website www.talktofrank.com
It aims to help young people and parents become better informed about the effects of drugs and encourages them to communicate about this traditionally taboo topic, with the message: "Drugs are illegal; talking about them isn't."
Ray Gorin, head of the Southend Drug Action Team, said: "We know from our extensive experience prevention really is better than cure.
"More 11 to 15 year olds are regularly taking drugs (18 per cent) than smoking (10 per cent) today."
