A busy Laindon street was closed following a head-on smash between two cars.
A BMW and a Pontiac Firebird collided on the B148, St Nicholas Lane, causing the road to be closed in both directions for two hours.
Police and fire crews from Basildon, Billericay and Grays used using heavy cutting equipment to cut the Pontiac driver free from his car and he was taken to Basildon Hospital with serious - but not life-threatening - internal injuries.
One of the drivers has been reported for alleged motoring offences.
Police want to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash on Sunday including the driver of an E-registration Ford Fiesta.
Anybody with information should call Laindon Traffic Police on 01268 541312.
