A commitment to sport at the Appleton School has earned it a Sportsmark award.

Physical education has been a priority at the Benfleet school and head of PE Matt Atkins said: "I am very proud that the school and it's staff and students have gained this award again.

Top of the class - Appleton School hockey team took the district championships with a 2-0 win over King John

"It is a reward to a dedicated team of staff who are willing to give of their time to help students raise their standard of performance in a wide range of activities."

Not surprisingly this emphasis has been rewarded with another successful season.

Alyson Moran has won three county swimming championships.

She has taken the under-14 Essex breaststroke awards over 50m, 100m and 200m.

Meanwhile the school's year 11 football and hockey teams both reached the district finals, winning one.

The hockey team beat King John 2-0, but the footballers went down 3-2 in a hard-fought game with Prittlewell.
