New speed cameras have gone up on a three-mile stretch of road where five people have died in less than 18 months.
There have been five fatal accidents on the A127 between Cuckoo Corner and the Southend boundary since January 2002.
Now four new speed cameras have gone up along the A127 - with 13 of the county's 23 new speed and red light cameras being in Southend.
Kelly Fairweather, spokesman for the Essex Safety Camera Partnership, said: "We have put these cameras in Southend because these are roads with serious accident history.
"Since January 2002 there have been five people killed in the 40mph zone. There have been a further 13 accidents involving serious injuries and 80 with slight injuries.
"Red light cameras have gone up as well because accidents have been caused by people who have failed to stop at the traffic lights."
