It is better late than never for one village, which has finally opened its millennium playing field.

And on hand to open the new space in Brook Road, Aldham, were six local residents all more than 90 years old.

Girlie Playle, Mary Impey, May Honeyball, May Bailey, Ena Hardie and Edward Green were delighted to officially open the playing field, which has been six years in the making.

Also at the opening ceremony were members of Aldham Parish Council, MP Bernard Jenkin and the mayor and mayoress of Colchester, Chris and Elizabeth Hall.

Afternoon tea was laid on for all the guests and there was a balloon race for the children.

Chairman of the parish council, Jackie Daines, told everyone of the hard work involved in getting the playing field up and running and said she hoped it would now be enjoyed by everyone.

Parish council clerk Anne Fulcher said: "The opening went very well indeed and the children were playing there all weekend, it's lovely."
