Despite being the hosts, Basildon AC could only finish third of the five competing clubs in the Southern Men's League Division One meeting.
Herne Hill, League runners-up last year, won on 136 points with the new towners totalling 111.5 -- Basildon were only seven behind second-placed Shaftesbury.
Steven Surety continued his good early-season form with a time of 49.0 in the 400m and completed a double with 54.9 in the 400 hurdles.
Two double firsts arrived in the shape of James Everard and Clint Nicholls in the high jump and and Mark Sandford (4.05.0) and James Tydeman (4.05.3) in the 1,500.
Everard also captured the javelin (53.17) while valuable seconds were achieved by Adam Jones on his club debut in the pole vault and Sandford in a competitive 800. Kit Branch was runner-up in the pole vault -- with a level height with the winner.
