A Colchester woman is critically ill in hospital following a three-car smash near Nayland last night
The accident happened just after 7.30pm on the A134, close to the Essex-Suffolk border.
Firefighters used hydraulic cutting gear to free the 55-year-old driver of a Vauxhall Nova. She was taken to Colchester General Hospital with what are believed to be serious head injuries.
A police spokesman this morning described her condition as "critical".
The driver of a Vauxhall Cavalier was also taken to hospital with what were described as "slight" injuries. She is thought to have been free of the wreckage before rescue teams from Colchester arrived.
Police today said the 54-year-old Great Cornard woman suffered bruising and whiplash but was later allowed home.
The driver of a BMW a 34-year-old Great Waldingfield woman escaped the crash unhurt.
