Elderly residents are being targeted by bogus callers posing as builders, according to police investigating a spate of frauds across Essex.
Officers involved in Operation Grizzly Bear - a year-long operation into criminals who trick their way into the homes of the unwary to steal cash and property - have warned people in south Essex to be extra vigilant following recent incidents.
Officers have detected at least two bogus callers operating in Colchester and believe these tricksters could also be operating in south Essex.
A police spokesman said: "Don't let anyone into your house without checking their identity.
"If in doubt don't let them in and contact police."
In recent cases, the conmen have posed as builders claiming to have accidentally contaminated the water supply.
