Maternity services in Colchester have received international recognition for their commitment to mothers and babies.
Essex Rivers Healthcare Trust has been awarded a special certificate of commitment by Unicef the United Nations Children's Fund.
The announcement came during National Breastfeeding Awareness Week.
Sue Coltman, midwifery sister at Colchester General Hospital, said: "We decided to join forces with Unicef UK's Baby Friendly initiative to improve practices and increase breastfeeding.
"During Breastfeeding Week we want to send the message to all mothers that breastfeeding is definitely the best choice for them and their babies."
She said women who are unable or choose not to breastfeed are supported and educated in bottle feeding.
It has taken Essex Rivers Healthcare two years to achieve the certificate of commitment, which involved promoting breastfeeding and providing training for staff, including midwives and doctors.
