Parents and pupils at a Clacton school have been warned to watch out for bogus callers knocking at houses offering to take children to a hostel if they are unhappy at home.
The callers claim they are from the Local Education Authority but show no identification
Two attempts have been made at the homes of 16-year-old girls who are pupils at Clacton County High School but without success.
Jill Brindle, a vice- principal at the school, said it was frightening for the girls and parents were concerned.
"We have taken the step of putting a strong warning in our parent news and newsletter for pupils," she said.
Mrs Brindle said the school had checked with the LEA and social services who knew nothing about it and certainly had not sent anyone to the houses.
However, when they spoke to police, staff were told there had been other similar incidents.
"It appears these people turn up in a black London taxi with logos on the side and this has happened before," added Mrs Brindle.
"These people have no lawful entry and police have suggested that if anyone gets a call of this kind they should contact police immediately," added Mrs Brindle.
