Maldon residents could soon have the chance to see their homes star in films and on TV.

The Dengie area has become so popular with film crews for its historic and atmospheric locations that council staff are to compile a database of people interested in hiring out their homes and premises for filming.

And the tourist information centre plans to organise tours of sites used for TV and films. This week Channel 4 were making a series called The Seven Ages of Britain at Hythe Quay.

Scenes from the forthcoming BBC series, Spooks, were filmed at Bradwell Power Station.

In April, Marion Hobden from Heybridge Basin handed over her house to Changing Rooms. Last year, BBC's The Murder Game was filmed in the district at sites including All Saints Church in Purleigh and Creeksea Place, which was also used for an adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations in the 1970s.

The ITV adaptation of Nicci French's thriller, The Safe House, was filmed further along the coast.

Shot in and around Maldon, the film, The Lawless Heart, was chosen to close the Chelmsford Film Festival in 2002.

Locations included the High Street and Tolleshunt villages.

Maldon TIC manager Margaret Hance said: ''We've received a number of inquiries from people asking about the programmes.''When the Murder Game was being filmed council staff found beds for the 150 crew. The show brought £20,000 in business to the Blue Boar.

Economic development officer Russell Dawes, said: ''We are very conscious we don't want to spoil the district. It's about striking a balance and showing the district in a nice light.''
