An elderly couple today told how they could only stand and watch as hundreds of pounds worth of property went up in smoke after arsonists struck at their home.

Pensioners Edna and Ron Greenfield lost the disabled scooter they shared, along with bikes, a lawnmower, gardens tools and three sheds at the back of their house in Tyler Street, Parkeston.

The couple were alerted to the fire by neighbours.

"When we got outside, there was a terrific blaze," said 84-year-old Mrs Greenfield.

"The flames were as high as the trees and it frightened the wits out of us. It is usually very quiet round here and it was a great shock."

Mrs Greenfield said the biggest loss was the scooter, which she and her 82-year-old husband used to get about, and their sheds which were destroyed.

Neighbours Susan and Richard White also had a shed burned down, containing bikes, a lawnmower and other garden tools.

Mrs White said they had also been unaware of the fire when it started and were alerted by others in the street.

Sgt Peter Wood, of Harwich police, said the incident, at about 11pm on Sunday, was being treated as arson.
