More than 150 members of the Boys' Brigade presented Harwich with its new inshore lifeboat.
The youngsters from around the country stood on Harwich Quay yesterday to hand over the boat which they funded through their Millennium Appeal.
The boat is the latest design of the Atlantic 75 and was officially named Sure and Steadfast, which is the brigade motto, by national vice-president, John Young.
Former archbishop envoy and Beirut hostage Terry Waite was also there. He has had a strong association with the lifeboat station since naming its Severn Class lifeboat Albert Brown seven years ago.
As he cut the celebration cake, Mr Waite said he was pleased at the Boys' Brigade appeal which would save lives on the sea.
Capt Rod Shaw, secretary of Harwich Lifeboat, said: "He is a nice person and he's kind and always pleased to see the crew. He is an ambassador for us, he really is."
