A 21-year-old woman screamed in horror when burglars wearing ski masks barged their way into her flat after ringing her doorbell.

The two men - who police believe may know the victim - called at her flat in South Avenue, Southend when she was home alone.

As the young woman opened her front door, they pushed past her, went into the flat and helped themselves to several pieces of jewellery, passports from the living room and £43 cash.

They then escaped through the front door.

Det Sgt Steve Jones, of Southend police's burglary squad, said: "I would go as far as to say that the assailants probably knew the victim because they seemed to know exactly where to go to steal the goods."

Both men wore ski masks, gloves and dark clothing. They are thought to be white.

The terrifying incident happened at just after midnight on Friday.
