A councillor today hit out as the closure of two Leigh post offices was confirmed.

West Leigh post office in London Road and another London Road branch opposite Canvey Road are to close after agreements were reached with both sub postmasters.

The closures - part of a nationwide efficiency drive - will mean a journey to Rectory Grove post office for many elderly people.

Peter Wexham, Liberal Democrat councillor for Leigh, said: "Some years ago east Leigh post office closed and they said everyone could use West Leigh post office but now that is going.

"Elderly people are complaining bitterly about it. Safeway was asked to take on the franchise but it doesn't want to know because it is being bought out.

"The Post Office wants everyone to get their pensions paid into their bank accounts but for some elderly people a trip to a post office is their only lifeline and the only time they get out and meet other people. It is very upsetting for them."

The closures follow a public consultation in line with rules set by the Post Office and watchdog, Postwatch.

George Hooper, Post Office area representative, said public concerns about the closure of their nearest post offices had been considered. But he said the overall viability of the Post Office's urban branches was a more important issue than the future of an "individual branch".
