More GPs, a 24-hour health centre and local outpatient services are the top priorities for Witham.

This was agreed by representatives of Witham, Braintree and Halstead Care Trust, who met Witham Town councillors to discuss the future of health care in the town.

Phil Barlow (Lab, Chipping Hill and Central) said: "We spoke about the health trust's priorities for the immediate future and medium term and they acknowledged that they do have to invest in more infrastructure in Witham.

"We would like somewhere for the immediate treatment of minor injuries, we need 24-seven cover, better GP access and out patient services so people don't have to travel so far for treatment.

"The issue is whether this can be provided, where it could be, how long it will take and ensuring we have the money to do it."

Witham currently has a health centre with six GPs on Mayland Road, Fern House Surgery in Newland Street, a two-GP practice in Douglas Grove and a one-GP surgery in Collingwood Road.

Both the town council and the health trust are keen to see more GPs in the town, giving the public better access to health care services.

Witham, Braintree and Halstead Care Trust is planning a public consultation at the beginning of July to find out what are the health care priorities of Witham residents while the town council finalises its list of priorities.
