About 25 hypodermic needles were found by firefighters called out to a blaze.
A crew from Colchester fire station was called to a fire at the pillbox on Cowdray Avenue in the town, shortly after 6pm on Friday.
Firefighters dealt with the blaze involving rubbish, believed to have been started deliberately, and removed the needles.
Colchester police have been informed of the blaze and the discovery of the needles.
A spokesman at the fire station said people should take extra care in the area, especially if they have children.
