Residents were today celebrating after winning their fight against plans to place a mobile phone mast near their homes.
Colchester councillors have rejected a bid by telecoms company Hutchison 3G to place a 15m-high mast on land at Fiveways Fruit Farm in Heath Road, Stanway.
The proposals led to protests from people living nearby who were worried about the effect telecommunications equipment could have on their health.
They had concerns about risks of cancer and dangers for young children in their homes and at the nearby Stanway Fiveways Primary School.
Stanway Parish Council had agreed with them and 45 residents wrote to planning officers to voice their concerns.
After hearing about the residents' views, Colchester Council's planning committee decided to reject the plans despite a recommendation to approve them by planning officers.
Former Colchester councillor and Stanway resident Peter Thompson said he was glad the committee had rejected the proposals and had listened to people's concerns.
