A disabled man who was forced to sleep in a toilet because Southend Council could not find him accommodation has finally been given a temporary home.
Malcolm Bytheway spent the night in a disabled toilet because housing officers could not find a B&B or a hostel to take him and his wheelchair.
The 37-year-old partially-sighted stroke victim had recently suffered a suspected heart attack because of diabetes but nevertheless was considered a liability because of fire regulations.
Now, however, a home has been found on the ground floor of a bed-and-breakfast accommodation in York Road, Southend.
Mr Bytheway said: "I can't believe that I have found somewhere at last.
"It's all thanks to the Echo. Nobody wanted to know before, now I have suddenly got a roof over my head.
"It is wonderful. It is warm and comfortable and they do wonderful breakfasts there. I am so happy."
A spokeswoman for Southend Hospital said: "We are pleased to hear the Mr Bytheway has now found some accommodation."
