Southend town centre was today thrown into chaos after a suspect package was discovered at the town's Customs and Excise building.

Hundreds of people were evacuated and surrounding roads sealed off as bomb squad officers were called to Alexandra House in Victoria Avenue, at around 8am.

The operation created traffic congestion in the town centre for two hours.

Police initially feared a bomb had been sent but the package was found to contain an electronic games console.

Precautions were also taken by train operator First Great Eastern, which advised British Transport police officers based at Southend Victoria station - which is opposite Alexandra House - to close an entrance leading out to Victoria Avenue.

A spokeswoman added: "We took minor precautions. However, these did not affect any of our train services."

John Barber, regional spokesman for Customs and Excise Law Enforcement, said: "If there is any hint of a risk, no chances are ever taken."

A spokesman for Southend police said: "Following investigations by the Army bomb disposal unit, based at Colchester, the package was revealed to be an electronic games controller and electronic accessories."
