A courageous have-a-go hero was threatened with a wooden pole after foiling a late-night theft attempt.
The man spotted three criminals as they tried to break into the cash compartment of a telephone box in Ipswich Road, Colchester, just after midnight today.
After he challenged them, one of the men went to a car and came back with the wooden weapon, which he used to threaten him.
But then the trio got into their blue, E-reg Ford Sierra estate and drove away in the direction of Ardleigh, leaving the witness unhurt.
Det Sgt Roger Napier, of Colchester CID, praised the man for his role in foiling the theft.
He said: "It is a commendable action to challenge three men and the important thing is that he phoned us as well so we were able to get out and look for them."
The man with the wooden pole has been described as white, 5ft 6ins tall with a medium build and short blond hair.
His two companions were both wearing dark clothing.
