An investigation was today under way after a man plunged more than 35ft to his death from scaffolding at the Grays section of the Channel Tunnel rail link.
It is believed that as the man fell from the scaffolding, he hit the structure before landing on concrete below.
Parts of the structure, including scaffolding poles, then came crashing down upon him.
Fire crews from Grays were called at just after 3pm yesterday to Burnley Road, Grays, where the exit section of the tunnel is being created.
They helped recover the 28-year-old from the deep pit-like area where he had been working, carefully removing poles and allowing paramedics to treat his injuries.
The man - who has not been identified - was taken to Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford, Kent, but later died.
