History will be made on Satuday when Basildon hosts its first ever rugby league game.
The Essex Eels entertain Cambridge Eagles in their inaugural Eastern Conference League clash, played at Basildon Rugby Club (3pm).
But the club's progress has been disrupted by the departure of boss Steve Haney, who has returned to his native Australia. Despite this the club is still alive and will hope to make an impact in the six-team league.
And as the season progresses they can count on the support of the area's Super-league franchise, London Broncos.
Development officer Phil Jones is planning to bring an under-18 squad to play a warm-up match before one of their home games within the next six weeks.
"We want to give links to clubs like the Eels and give them a focal point to attract people to their club," he said.
